Caledonia Golf & Fish Club is ranked No. 25 in the nation and No. 1 in the Myrtle Beach area by Golfweek in its 2014 rankings of the top 100 resort golf courses, released Nov. 1.
The spectacular Pawleys Island, S.C., layout crafted through tidal marshes, freshwater creek and huge live oaks by architect Mike Strantz has been a Myrtle Beach-area favorite since opening in February 1994 on the site of a former rice plantation that was used for hunting prior to the building of the golf course.
“This great honor represents the feelings of golfers who return each year to Caledonia for a memorable experience that they won’t get anywhere else,” said Caledonia PGA director of golf operations Bob Seganti. “Since opening in 1994, Caledonia has remained a Grand Strand favorite that golfers enjoy regardless of their score.”
Caledonia makes an awe-inspiring first impression from the club’s entrance, a half-mile trip back in time on a road shaded by rows of live oaks on both sides, that leads to a stately antebellum-style clubhouse. After completing their round, golfers can enjoy food and drink from a cozy patio just a few paces behind the 18th green.
With his trademark creative flair, Strantz designed a par-70 layout filled with potential signature holes that is challenging for low-handicappers yet very playable for high-handicappers. Superintendent Jackson Clemons maintains the course in premium condition year-round. The par-4 18th provides a fitting crescendo with a short approach over water to the long, narrow putting surface framed by the clubhouse.
