The southern most course on the Waccamaw Golf Trail, Founders Club immediately impresses you with its striking beauty. Visible from Highway 17 is the par-5 9th hole as it runs parallel to Ocean Highway. It's both the "oldest" and the "newest" course on the Waccamaw Golf Trail. The new 18-hole, par 72 layout was constructed by former Gary Player lead designer Thomas Walker and opened in 2008. It was built atop Gene Hamm’s original course Sea Gull Golf Club, which dated back to 1966 and was the fourth oldest course on the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand.
Founders Club can be a handful from the tips, but it offers 5 sets of tees so you can select the distance that allows you to enjoy a relaxing game or challenge yourself. The strategic nature of the course will bring you back time after time to try out a different plan of attack. Natural beach sand fills the waste areas, and native grasses such as love and bluestem populate the mounds and waste areas. Cart paths are kept to a minimum on this “ocean-style” course, which gives golfers a unique coastal golfing experience – and makes the course senior friendly. Wetlands, live oaks, and pines add further aesthetic value to the course.
In 2011, Founders earned the distinction of being named “Golf Course of the Year” by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association, a distinction that is well deserved for design, condition and service.
The practice facilities at Founders include a putting area that is over 11,000 feet, combined with a chipping facility so you can simulate hitting out of waste hazards. A 5,000 square foot Lowcountry-style clubhouse features a wrap-around porch that overlooks the 10th and 18th holes and houses an upscale Grill Room, locker rooms and a well-stocked Pro Shop.
